Caretta Friends ("the app") is a free tool for volunteers protecting sea-turtle nests. We keep data collection to a minimum and the app is offline-first — it works, and stores your data, on your device without an account.
What we store
- Nest records you add — photos, notes, the nest's GPS location and timestamps. Stored on your device. If you choose to sign in, they sync to our database so your volunteer community can see the same nests.
- Approximate device location — used only to show nearby nests and beaches on the map and in the AR finder, and to attach a location to a nest you record. Not used for advertising, and never sold or shared with advertisers.
- Optional account — an email address, only if you decide to save your account so your work syncs across devices. The app is anonymous by default and fully usable without an account.
What we do NOT do
- No ads and no advertising trackers.
- No third-party analytics that identify you personally.
- We never sell your data or share it for marketing.
- Exact nest coordinates are treated as sensitive and are not published publicly.
Third-party services
- OpenStreetMap / MapLibre — map tiles.
- Supabase — our database, used only if you sign in to sync.
- Weather / air-quality providers — aggregate environmental data for a beach area; no personal data is sent.
Keeping and deleting your data
Your local data lives on your device — deleting the app removes it. For data you synced with an account, email us and we'll delete your account data.
Children
The app is rated 4+ and does not knowingly collect personal data from children.
